Classification: Full Time, Salaried, Exempt
Reports to: Chief Financial and Operating Officer
Job Summary:
The Stable Manager is responsible for the full care and well-being of the school’s horses and privately owned
horses. The Stable Manager in cooperation with the Director of Riding supports the operations of the equestrian
program. The Stable Manager oversees and manages day-to-day maintenance and grounds operations for the
McConnell Stables. This position also provides leadership to the Assistant Stable Manager, Stable
Maintenance, and the Grooms. In addition, the Stable Manager identifies facility needs and assists with and
oversees any projects pertaining to the barn.
From time to time the Stable Manager may provide mounted and/or unmounted instruction for the students
while they are riding, handling the horses in the barn and leading them to/from paddocks. Instruction is
designed to help each rider develop into a true horsewoman who appreciates each horse as an individual and
understands the fundamentals of the horse’s health and the sport.
Key Responsibilities:
● Provide full care of horses
● Act as liaison to veterinarians, farriers and other outside service providers
● Document and communicate equine health related information to owners of private/leased horses
● Provide routine medical treatments and emergency medical care as need
● Prepare, monitor, and implement medical care for horses as directed by veterinarian
● Schedule staff and workloads for the Grooms
● Train, guide, and provide leadership to the Assistant Stable Manager, Stable Maintenance, and the
Grooms
● Step in for a grooming string in the event of an absent groom
● Oversee and participate in the operations of the equestrian program as needed, including but not
limited to mucking, cleaning and filling water buckets, preparing feed buckets, sweeping and
removing cobwebs from aisles and stalls
● Ensure the physical plant is free of defects by notifying the Director of Facilities of repairs required
using the work order system
● Operate School tractors, trucks and horse trailers as needed
● Oversee maintenance for arena footing, equipment, jumps, and fence lines
● Student instruction in horse care

● Ability to ride school and private horses as well as longe horses to maintain fitness
● Participating in a rotating on call schedule which includes occasional weekends, after hours and
holidays as well as possible night check duties

Qualifications:
● Minimum bachelor's degree or minimum of 5+ years’ experience as professional in the equine
industry with a focus on Stable Management
● Familiarity with school equestrian programs preferred
● Potential to reside on campus
● Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical and organizational skills
● Ability to work independently and as a part of a high-performing team with exceptional initiative
● Strong customer-service orientation
● Willingness and ability to have a flexible work schedule, including evenings,weekends and rotating
holidays

While performing the duties of this position an incumbent is required to regularly remain sedentary for long
periods of time in meetings and while processing information and paper work both manually and on a
computer.
The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands and arms to reach and hands to type and manipulate a
computer keyboard and mouse. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision
and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English both written
and orally, over a telephone and in person. The employee is regularly required to listen, physically direct, and
speak.
Occasionally, an incumbent may be required to lift up to 25 pounds, traverse uneven terrain and climb stairs
while moving about campus, bend and stoop. Work hours may vary and include days, nights, and weekends.
Employees may be required to drive a vehicle for student needs and/or on School business. The noise level in
the work environment is usually moderately quiet; however, variations in noise level may occur when the
employee attends school functions such as assemblies, school dances, and other events.
