About the Position

Our Equestrian Assistant Manager is responsible for supporting the Equestrian Manager with the overall supervision of Camp Runoia’s horseback riding program. This is a full-time, seasonal position with the possibility for multi-year seasonal employment. As a key member of our team, the Equestrian Program Assistant Manager works with the Equestrian Manager and Camp Directors to plan, organize, and execute a comprehensive program that focuses on education, skill-building, and teaches campers about the joys of horses. Our program teaches primarily English/Hunter jumper riding, and we offer a range of mounted lessons for campers at various skill levels. The Equestrian Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting with the managing of the Riding Staff, coordinating daily barn tasks and horse care for our herd of 9-12 horses, and scheduling camper activities. Assistant Head of Riding - Minimum Qualifications 

  1. • Aged 18 or older with minimum one year prior on staff at Runoia or similar experience
  2. • Training and experience in riding and horse care (documented)
  3. • Current CPR and first aid certification 
  4. • Ability to teach riding skills to campers of all ages and abilities
  5. • Desire and ability to work with children in the outdoors
  6. • Ability to function as a positive role model for campers and staff
  7. • Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with campers and their families
  8. • Ability to relate to one's peer group and work well with other camp staff
  9. • Ability to accept guidance and supervision
  10. • Good character, integrity, and adaptability
  11. • Enthusiasm, maturity, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  12. • High School diploma or equivalent and/or completion of Camp Runoia's training program
  13. • Ability to follow and enforce all Camp rules and policies
  14. Responsible to: Riding Director, Camp Directors
  15. General Responsibility - to assist in the planning, directing and supervising of Camp Runoia's riding program, maintaining standards that lead to a safe, quality program.

Specific Responsibility:

  1. Understand your responsibilities in the riding program participate in and lead training during pre-camp training.
  2. Maintain equipment to ensure safety, cleanliness, and good repair. Store equipment for safety
  3. Develop lesson plans for your assigned classes assist others with planning
  4. Request necessary repairs
  5. Assist riding director with maintaining achievement records and writing evaluations on campers for riding activity
  6. Perform barn chores as directed
  7. These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required by the needs of the camp

Essential Functions

  1. Ability to communicate with staff and campers in safety regulations in the riding area.
  2. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to riding and camping activities.
  3. Ability to communicate and work with groups participating, and provide necessary instruction to campers and/or staff.
  4. Ability to teach a minimum of three classes each day, make repairs to equipment, move riding equipment as necessary, conduct stable and horse management.
  5. Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  6. Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct the activity to achieve camper development objectives.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  1. Communication skills and cognitive abilities to give individual instruction, conduct group activities and to give clear and effective verbal presentations and instructions to groups of up to 150 people.
  2. Physical ability to assist campers in the event of an emergency (CPR, fire, weather emergency, injury, etc.)
  3. Ability to sustain moderate physical exertion; negotiating uneven terrain; lifting hay bales up to 60lbs, and possessing physical strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

Hours, Benefits, and Compensation 

  1. Full time June - Mid August
  2. Compensation dependent on experience 
  3. Resident staff preferred, private or shared bath adult housing
  4. Housing, meals, and laundry service are provided for resident staff for the duration of our summer camp season
