Assistant Manager — Equine Care & Operations

Reports To: Equine Care Manager

Location: Renaissance Equine Rescue & Welfare Foundation – 193 Tamarack Ln. Vass. NC 28394

Employment Type: Full Time – Live In

Salary: $50,000-$60,000 (based on experience) plus housing, utilities, and internet.

Position Summary

The Assistant Manager lives on site, supports daily equine care operations, and team coordination to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all horses and staff. This role combines hands-on horse care, administrative responsibilities, and leadership support. The Assistant Manager serves as the primary operational lead in the absence of the Equine Care Manager on Saturday and Sunday and helps maintain consistent standards of care, communication, and documentation across the organization, and manages overnight medical care and monitoring as needed.

The housing is a large two bedroom, 1 bath apartment over the barn.


Key Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

Equine Care & Facility Oversight

  1. Ensure daily feeding, watering, turnout, and stall maintenance are completed accurately and on schedule.
  2. Monitor horses for signs of illness, injury, or distress and report concerns promptly to the Equine Care Manager.
  3. Administer medications and treatments, or ensure Equine Care Techs administer them according to veterinarian and managerial instructions.
  4. Maintain clean, organized barns, pastures, and storage areas.
  5. Oversee safe handling of horses during feeding, turnout, and medical treatment.
  6. Complete and record monthly horse health checks for each equine resident.
  7. Coordinate weekly feed orders with Equine Care Techs serving as feed room leads.
  8. Maintain daily equine activity notes in Salesforce.
  9. Organize seasonal blanket assignments, storage, and usage.
  10. Maintain and execute the deworming protocol, including coordinating fecal sample collection with the veterinarian clinic and delegating tracking to Equine Care Techs.
  11. Utilizing rehabilitation tools such as Pegasus Class IV laser, Magnawave PEMF, Respond PEMF blanket, EquiRelease fascia massage gun, Revita Vet devices, CO2 Therapy, and Equicore System (training on these devices will be provided).
  12. Executing manual massage, stretching, and cavaletti exercises as necessary.

Team Leadership & Coordination

  1. Serve as the primary point of contact for weekend staff and volunteers.
  2. Coordinate with adjunct providers in the absence of the Equine Care Manager.
  3. Assign daily tasks and ensure efficient workflow (Saturday & Sunday).
  4. Assist with onboarding and on-the-job training of staff and volunteers.
  5. Foster a positive, professional team environment.
  6. Communicate operational updates, concerns, and incidents to the Equine Care Manager.
  7. Participate in weekly staff meetings.

Safety & Emergency Response

  1. Ensure all team members follow safety protocols and proper equine handling procedures.
  2. Respond to minor workplace injuries and gather information for Workers’ Compensation reporting.
  3. Escalate major incidents or concerns to the Equine Care Manager.
  4. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emergency procedures and first aid protocols.

Administrative & Record Keeping

  1. Ensure Equine Care Techs maintain accurate daily care logs, feeding schedules, and health observations.
  2. Create, distribute, and train staff on SOPs as directed by the President and the Equine Care Manager.
  3. Reorder supplies or report shortages and maintenance needs.

Skills & Physical Requirements

  1. At least 8 years of equine experience, preferably in a professional setting.
  2. Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience
  3. Strong organizational and communication skills
  4. Strong experience in ground handling horses of varied sizes and temperaments.
  5. Reliable, calm, and safety-focused around horses
  6. Proficiency in proper grooming techniques and basic wound care, including first aid.
  7. Proficient in recognizing signs of colic, choke, hoof disorders such as thrush and white line, skin disorders, respiratory disfunction, and anhidrosis.
  8. Knowledge of wound management, hoof care, standing wraps/bandages, hoof soaking, and abscess wrapping.
  9. Ability to lift 50 lbs, bend, squat, twist and perform physical barn work in all weather conditions
  10. Comfortable following veterinary care instructions and medication protocols
  11. Driving John Deere Gators or similar RTVs for farm navigation (walking across the farm is minimal, as horses are often ponied off gators or golf carts).

Skills & Physical Requirements

  1. Strong experience in ground handling of horses of varied sizes and temperaments.
  2. Proficiency in proper grooming techniques and basic wound care, including first aid.
  3. Knowledge of hoof care, standing wraps/bandages, hoof soaking, and abscess wrapping.
  4. Physical ability to lift 50 pounds, bend, twist, and squat as needed.
  5. Driving John Deere Gators or similar RTVs for farm navigation. (Walking across the farm is minimal, as horses are often ponied off gators or golf carts.)
