Stable Hand & Herd Manager
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Stable Hand to join our team. As a Stable Hand , you will be responsible for assisting with the daily operations and maintenance of our farm and stables. This is a hands-on role that requires physical stamina, knowledge of farm work, experience with horses, and a love for working with animals.
The position will start as a Stable Hand position with the opportunity to grow into the stable’s Herd Manager. Additional income opportunities for stall cleaning shifts. Additional opportunities for training and trail guiding for the right person.
Duties:
– Perform general maintenance tasks around the farm, such as cleaning stables, repairing fences, and maintaining equipment
– Assist with feeding, grooming, and turn out of horses
– Handle and restrain animals safely and efficiently
– Administer basic medical care to animals under the guidance of the barn owner and a veterinarian
– Perform basic repairs on farm buildings, fences and equipment
– Utilize hand tools for various tasks around the farm
– Keep accurate records of animal care, feeding schedules, and maintenance activities
Experience:
– Previous experience working on a farm or in a similar role is preferred
– Familiarity with equine handling techniques and safety protocols
– Prior horse experience and be comfortable handling all types of horses
Requirements:
– Must have reliable transportation — no on site housing available at this time
– Ability to be self-directed and pro-active
– Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting heavy objects and working outdoors in all weather conditions
– Basic math skills for measuring feed portions and calculating medication dosages
Compensation:
– $15/hour starting wage + commissions and shared tips
– Unlimited riding access and free riding lessons.

Painted Bar Stables is a large and busy recreational horse farm in Burdett, NY. The stables is located just off of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail in the Finger Lakes Wine Country. We are looking for a motivated individual to join the team to help care for our 40+ horses as we play host to over 3,000 riders and students a year.
Our farm hosts public trail riding, adult and youth lesson, boarding, distance/endurance riding and breeding programs.
The facilities consist of a well groomed trail system, outdoor arena, small indoor arena, round pen, 35 box stalls, 10 tie stalls, 4 run-ins. Our farm is home to a variety of horses of different ages, temperaments and training stages. Most of the horses on site are owned by the farm, but we also have a handful of boarded horses owned by others.
