Hours: 40 hours a week, salaried exempt position 

  • Some weekends and nights depending on ROCK’s needs 
  • Split On Call duties with Equine Assistant

ROCK, Ride On Center for Kids is looking for a full-time Equine Manager. We are a non-profit equine facility in Georgetown, Texas, providing Equine-Assisted Services to children, adults, and veterans.  

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Equine Manager will be responsible for the ROCK Herd in all aspects of health, wellness, training, and conditioning. The Equine Manager is responsible for all donations, purchases, and retirements of the ROCK herd.  

We are looking for someone with a positive “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail with a high degree of initiative and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain health and safety of ROCK herd. Follow and uphold all PATH Intl. and ROCK approved practices, policies, and procedures 
  • Be available to ROCK staff and volunteers for diagnosis and guidance of horse health issues 
  • Develop leads and relationships with equine donors 
  • Lead search and evaluation of prospective equine partners 

  • Negotiate contracts for purchase and donation of equine partners 

  • Develop and implement training for trial horses 

  • Evaluate specific herd members for retirement and evaluate prospective retirement homes for horses 
  • Coordinate equine activities, development and conditioning schedule to maintain health of herd 

  • Conditioning Team (members, activities, and schedule) 
  • Partner with Equine Assistant to exercise the herd as needed 
  • Partner with staff to exercise the herd as needed 

  • Coordinate and maintain veterinary, farrier, and chiropractor appointments, routine and emergency 
  • Supervise Equine Assistant and stable staff 
  • Train volunteer feeders in processes, herd first aid, and dispensing medicines 
  • Develop and maintain feeding schedule for herd (frequency, pasture protocol, individual diets) 
  • Collaborate with Facilities Department for current and future pasture assignment and maintenance 
  • Collaborate with Facilities Department in maintaining supplies for horses (feed, shavings, medical supplies, tack, etc.)

  • Develop and implement Horse Handler Mentorship program and facilitate communication with the Volunteer Department 
  • Educate and mentor staff, volunteers, instructors in training, and interns, as needed 
  • Create and maintain the Equine Department budget on an annual basis 
  • Coordinate with CEO, Marketing/Development Department and staff for transporting herd to special events 
  • Oversee the professional documentation of all equine files re: donations, purchases, training, health, rehab, and usage 
  • Attend and contribute to Horseshoe Club meetings 
  • Other duties assigned by the Program Director and the CEO 

Preferred Minimum Qualifications/Experience 

  • Advanced knowledge of equine health and well being 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in riding skills  
  • Demonstrate proficiency of horse care and behavior 
  • Experience in equine training and management 
  • Experience in transporting horses (bumper pull and gooseneck trailers) 
  • Experience working with children and/or adults with disabilities 
  • Experience working with equine professionals of different backgrounds, skill levels and training  
  • PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor certification or higher – a plus 

Qualities 

  • Enjoys sharing knowledge and educating others about equine partners 
  • Enjoys teaching horse handler skills and coaching others with minimal equine experience 
  • Excited about working with children and adults with various abilities and skills 
  • Patience is a must 

Special Requirements 

  • Successfully complete pre-employment background check   
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid (can complete within the first 6 months of employment)
